Standards, Guidelines & Core Competencies for Canadian Career Coaches
Career Coaching is the pairing of two distinct areas: Career Development and Professional Coaching.
Currently, anyone practicing in the area of career development and/or professional coaching might identify as a “Career Coach.” However, the need for standard qualification and regulation for career coaches and other practitioners is evident in Canada. The Canadian Council for Career Development (CCCD) provides a national advocacy voice for the career development profession. It promotes provincial/territorial collaboration on common issues such as certification, training, and practitioner mobility.
Career Development: Career professionals in Canada are guided by The Canadian Standards & Guidelines for Career Development Practitioners (S&Gs) These standards define the competencies career coaches and other career development practitioners need in order to practice effectively and ethically. S&G’s are used extensively in Canada in shaping professional training and development programs, certification, and scope of practice.
Professional Coaching: The International Coach Federation (ICF) is a certifying body that leads the development of Professional Coaching. ICF has identified some core coaching competencies to provide a greater understanding about the skills and approaches used within today’s coaching profession. In Canada, some academic institutions provide ICF recognized programs. One such example is Concordia University’s Professional and Personal Coach Certification (PPCC).
Certification & Credentials for Career Coaches
National/Provincial/Territorial Certification for Career Development Practitioners
Currently there is no national standard qualification requirement or regulation for career coaches across Canada. However, certain provinces have Career Development Certification programs. Certification is mandatory for Career Counsellors in Québec. Voluntary certification is in place in Alberta and British Columbia and is in development in Nova Scotia, Ontario and New Brunswick.
