Compassion Across Borders

Borders

The longstanding friendship between Canada and the United States has been tested in recent months, particularly due to former President Donald Trump’s waffling and dangerous rhetoric, including remarks that cast doubt on alliances with longstanding partners like Canada. These unsettling signals have affected both the economic relationship and the spirit of cooperation between our nations.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has recently addressed these tensions with clarity and resolve. While expressing concern over the direction of U.S. political discourse, he emphasized Canada’s unwavering commitment to stability, shared values, and responsible leadership. “The fever that has gripped our southern neighbour will eventually pass,” Carney said. “In the meantime, Canada will remain resolute and true to our values: solidarity with one another, sustainability for our children’s future, and dynamism as we build the strongest economy in the G7.” His words remind us that our response must be rooted in compassion across borders, not division.

We must be clear-eyed. It is essential that we protect Canada’s economy and safeguard our autonomy. Respectful partnerships cannot come at the cost of national interest. As a sovereign nation, we have both the right and the responsibility to make decisions that ensure the well-being, security, and prosperity of Canadians.

It is also vital to recognize that many Americans do not support the divisive rhetoric coming from their administration. They continue to value their relationship with Canada and stand in solidarity with us. Our shared history is rich with moments of cooperation, resilience, and friendship. From global conflicts to humanitarian efforts, Canadians and Americans have stood side by side—not just as neighbours, but as true partners.

We must remain steadfast in supporting those most affected by hostile rhetoric and destabilizing policies—whether they are migrants, refugees, or citizens caught in the crossfire. Compassion across borders means upholding human dignity and defending the rights of the vulnerable, regardless of where they live.

Let us move forward with courage, kindness, and clarity. Upholding our values while protecting Canada’s interests allows us to honour our shared past and build a future defined by peace, autonomy, and mutual respect. Together, let’s pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future for both Canadians and Americans.

With heartfelt gratitude and hope,

Sharon
